OUR MISSION:

Secure and Distribute Nutritious Food To Individuals and Households In Need.

The Red Wing Area Food Shelf began in 1983 as the Goodhue County Christmas Project. We are governed by an active board of 12 people and have over 125 volunteers who order, rescue, secure, and distribute nutritious food to our low income neighbors in our service area. We are grateful for the support and donations we receive from individuals, businesses, churches, civic organizations, and food drives.

We moved to 1755 Old West Main Street in 2011 after spending 28 years located in the basement of First Lutheran Church. Our main entrance is barrier-free, a bus stop is located in front of our building, and in Summer 2015 we updated our reception area and intake process with community involvement.

In 2020 during COVID we served 845 households and 2700 people. Of those households, 65% visited just 3 times to secure a week’s worth of groceries for themselves. In 2021 we served an average of 155 households per month. Nearly half our clients are working individuals and approximately 44% are children under the age of 18.

For each $1 donated, we can purchase about $3 worth of food from Channel One Food Bank in Rochester, MN. Other sources of food come from U.S. Government USDA approved products, rescued and purchased food from area retailers, and from gardeners who plant a row to share.
