Job Summary 
The Food Shelf Assistant supports the Food Shelf Manager with daily operations and ensures a positive, efficient experience for all. This role helps lead and support volunteers; manages food rescue pickups and donations; assists with receiving, unloading trucks, sorting food, and managing produce; organizes inventory; and maintains overall food shelf cleanliness. The Food Shelf Assistant also serves as the primary backup to the Food Shelf Manager during vacations or absences.

Responsibilities and Duties: Operations, Inventory, Food Rescue, Produce & Truck Deliveries 

• Coordinate food rescue pickups and receiving, including communication with partner  organizations. 
• Receive, unload, weigh, sort, and organize donated, rescued, and purchased food products.
• Manage produce, including inspecting for freshness, organizing, and removing spoiled items.
• Safely assist with unloading delivery trucks and transporting items into the building.
• Ensure proper tracking and documentation of all food rescue and incoming products. 
• Enter data accurately into spreadsheets and inventory tracking systems
• Assist with opening and closing the facility when needed. 
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized food shelf environment. 
• Step in to support any area of the food shelf as needed 

Volunteer Support & Leadership 
• Lead, motivate, and support food shelf volunteers. 
• Communicate effectively between the Food Shelf Manager and volunteers.
• Assist volunteers during food shelf operations as needed.

Qualifications & Skills 
• Experience in customer service and experience with a food shelf or retail setting. 
• Experience with or willingness to learn food rescue processes, produce handling, and partner coordination. 
• Ability to safely help unload trucks and move heavy products. 
• Proficiency with Computers: Google Docs, Gmail, and MealConnect. 
• Strong communication skills for interactions with staff, volunteers, and neighbors in need.
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
• The ability to speak Spanish is a plus.

Other Requirements 
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and work in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong attention to detail and food safety. 
• Must complete ServSafe Food Handler training within 30 days of employment. 
• Willingness to work in walk-in coolers and freezers as needed. 
• Must have a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, clean driving record, and have access to a reliable personal vehicle.
• Candidate must successfully complete and pass a criminal background check.
